ABSTRACT

Leachate problems in waste containment structures have over the years posed a big threat to the soil and underground water and consequently on the environment and humanity due to the inability of these structures to stop the migration of hazardous compounds. Gradation and microstructural analyses of treated clay soil utilized as clay liner material have been studied. Preliminary results show that the soil is an A-6, poorly graded and of high clay content. It is also identified as highly plastic soil. The additive, which is rice husk ash (RHA) was also characterized alongside the soil using both size distribution and SEM exposure. The treated exercise followed with the proportions of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30% addition of RHA and blending the mixture. The treated specimens were subjected to particle size analysis and SEM exposure to determine the influence of RHA on the soil in terms of fineness improvement and flocs formation. Results have shown that the addition of RHA improved the percentage fines of the treated soil and the formation of the floc. These are indications of the improved anti-leachate ability of the soil utilized as clay liner in a waste containment structure.
