ABSTRACT

A literature survey which describes the current state of research, need gaps and future directions in embodied energy of building materials research domain in Nigeria is presented. Building materials are major compositions of a building and their embodied energy property can influence much the building performance. A constructive non-meta analytic methodology was adopted for the study through classification and comparison of snapshot literature in embodied energy of building materials. The sources of information which provided facts and insights for achieving those objectives include survey of literature and interview with knowledgeable personnel in the area of built environment. The survey reveals energy management opportunities which would not have been apparent from a specific building case study alone. There are distinctions in past studies in the literature for Nigerian case study: none have addressed the embodied energy coefficient of materials; status of embodied energy studies for these materials is at low profile and the few investigations carried out focused on lifecycle operating energy of buildings. These lacks were attributed to inadequate personnel and unavailability of complete data on embodied energy system boundaries. This study is important to engineers and architects for making an informed decision on/in the design of/ designing resilient buildings using indegenous materials.

Keywords: building material, embodied energy, system boundary, resilient building, Nigeria.
